When I googled “Twitter sucks’, I found  20,400,000 results within 0.11 seconds. Why are there so many anti-twitter websites? Because they (just like me) don’t want to know what Jack Johnson is eating  for breakfast, and/or his likes and dislikes about his colleagues at  work. There is too much useless information on the internet and Twitter is providing a way to spread even more. Twitter is over-hyped,. Even local politicians use it,. They think they will reach their young voters , by providing them with (again) useless and uninteresting information.

A couple of short facts why twitter sucks:

• Twitter users might think they are having a private conversation but in fact the whole world can read along.
• Lots of the twitter users are “spammers”; they use their account to advertise.
• It is proven that the X generation is more enthusiastic about Twitter then the younger Y generation. Is this because Twitter is designed to be understood by elderly, digi-noobs and retards?

I also missed the continuously news flow, new facts, new video’s, new gossip, new songs and new products being launched on the market.
I started to realize how much influence internet, and especially social media had on me.

I made myself a list how my decisions were influenced by social media. Particularly my travel behaviour was affected by the opinion of other internet users.

“One week without internet!??!“

Planning to stay in London for a week I searched the internet for hours for the opinion of other travellers and their experiences.
My buying behaviour is also strongly influenced. When I bought the newest Ipod I  looked all over the internet to find the cheapest webshop, and when I found it, I was searching for reviews of the shop.

It was a tough week without my laptop, but in the end it made me  more conscious and aware about how social media play a part in my life .

These age groups have a lot of differences, Generation Y grew up on in a digital world, while most of Generation X got introduced to a computer in their late twenties. According to several studies the main characteristics of  the so-called generation Y are being able to multitask, have a good hand-eye coordination, being critical but willing to collaborate and have the need to be free; it is a mixed bag.

It is proven that the Y genners are more impatient, they have a small attention-span and they want instant gratification.
Also job wise they demand success quickly. While the X genners strongly believe in the “working your way up” concept.

Now that more Net genners enter the workplace, both generations grow further apart form each other.

What does the Y generation think?

Lisa Messenger, 36, is the director manager of Messenger Marketing and Messenger Publishing in Sydney. She comments:”Starting my first job in the early 1990s, I believed in the concept of “working my way up”. And after finding my niche in event and conference management, I did exactly that for the next eight years – putting in the hours, fitting into the culture, and steadily scoring promotions. Generation Y don’t seem to understand this concept. They keep asking, “How can we fast track?” and my answer to them is, “You can’t, really, because you need to make your mistakes along the way and learn from them.”
